...time for bed

Unlike most children I liked being able to go to bed early, almost straight upstairs to my bedroom after Mum had made tea. I remember getting comfortable in the blankets, making everything just right, fashioning the blankets into seats myself and my little friends. Ready to daydream, to mask the stark reality, to fantasize before sleep overcame me. Time hide from the real world; hoping I had not done anything bad that day before he came home the pub. I didn't want to be hit again. So I hid away from the remaining daylight, under a thin sheet, sitting on top of a shiny, green and red quilted top sheet which kept me cool. Just myself, Little Bear and Panda. I would drive 'the van' while Panda and Little Bear looked out for the 'baddies'. We always got away from the evil General. We never lost. We were a great team. I miss my nightly companions. They kept me safe from harm.
