...letting go
"Are you ready Jane?" Liz shouted from the bottom of the stairs.
"Ready or prepared?" Jane returned as Liz appeared at the door.
"Ready...as in your glad rags are on and you're looking ravishing! Wooooo!" Liz whooped.
"Those days are long gone, Lizzy dear." Jane sat in her knickers and bra, feeling fat and frumpy.
"Tish and piffle, you'll give your daughter a run for her money on the dance floor!" Liz sensed that Jane's mood was less than buoyant.
"I don't think I'll even see the dance floor." she audibly sighed.
"Why would that be?" Liz said whilst sitting on the bed.
"Because...I can't be happy if I don't feel happy, Liz." A lone tear formed and dropped.
"Is this because of Darren? And you know..."
"That he offered me a threesome with my daughter?" Jane squirmed as she covered her arms over her chest.
"He was drunk, Jane!"
"So was I and I kissed him first!!!" She shook her head in shame.
"A minor detail...and I would have done the same."
"Kiss him or consider a threesome?"
"No, I meant you refused" Liz tried the perspective angle, "but I may have considered the threesome first!" she tried to inject some humour, but failed.
"Oh Liz, how I can let my daughter marry this...fraud? He's a knight in rusty armour. Of all my daughters, she is my gem. My angel. All the other girls were precious, but the twins relied on each other. Molly was just a renegade, but Ruth...she's gentle, kind, forgiving. She's not marrying Darren for love, she just wants to mother him." Jane let loose.
"And what's wrong with that?" Liz held Jane's hand in comfort.
"She's only 17. She's a baby!" She held Jane's hand and shook it in frustration. "She's my baby, and she's still a baby herself."
"We all have to grow up sometime, Janey. This is her time, surely you can see that?"
"Liz, your hippy liberal views are refreshing, but when it comes to marriage this is sacred ground. And let's be frank, you've been married three times yourself!" Jane kept to her stoic values.
"Mmm...and they all rode me like Stallions..." Liz' eyes widened and smiled. "If it's a mistake let her make the mistake, Jane. Life is too short to plan every move, every day, month or year. You're right, the man may be a heel, but you'll never make Ruth see through your eyes. She's young, in love and free! Maybe she has had her legs wider than the Thames with him and it's just lust, but let her have her day, her moment. Life will look after itself."
"But its only been four months? No man ever swept me off my feet that quickly, Liz."
"Yes, but that's because you have a brain, Jane..." Liz was losing patience fast. "There's none so blind that cannot see. You just have to let go sooner or later."
"I know Liz, I know." Jane relaxed slightly, wiped away her tears and gave her friend a loving hug.
It's getting better, isn't it? I think so...so much so I can't even bear to look at the older stuff at the bottom! I worry at what shocking errors I will find...maybe it's better that way; signs of progression!
